How to manage the default phone app on open smartphones (Android 15+)


With Android 15, Google has introduced a new restriction: the system now allows only one default phone app at a time.

What does this mean for you? 

If you're using motica care as your only phone app (typically the case on blocked smartphones) nothing changes. Your experience will remain the same.

However, if you're using both motica care and the Samsung Phone app to make calls (often the case on open smartphones) this update introduces a few changes with the new motica care version (1.1.35) installed on any android version.

What is different in daily use? 

Previously, it was poss​ible to: 

  • Use motica care as the default app,
  • And still access the Samsung Phone app to dial a number, add a contact, or check your call history.

With Android 15, this is no longer possible. The non-default app is now blocked from performing key phone-related actions — including making calls.

How can I switch between phone apps easily?

To continue using both apps depending on your context (e.g., private use with Samsung, work use with motica care), we’ve made it easy for you. Watch the screenshots below to see how you can quickly change the default phone app when needed and seamlessly switch between personal and professional use, whether you are connected or not in motica care.

You have two places where you can switch the default phone app if motica is not set as default:

  • either at the login when you are not connected yet

  • or once connected, in the telephony tab, a banner is shown at the top, click on it to change the default phone app to motica care

Important Note

If you select “Don’t ask again” when prompted to choose a default phone app, the system will no longer display the choice popup.

To change the default app later, you’ll need to:

  • Manually update it in your phone settings, or
  • Contact our Support for assistance.

What do I miss by choosing either Samsung or motica care as default phone app?

  • By using Samsung Phone as default, you have:
    • No "on a call" status shown in motica care
    • No colleagues or contacts name for incoming and outcoming calls
    • No call transfer motica care users
  • By using motica care as default, you have:
    • The obligation to be logged in to make phone calls
    • No Samsung dial pad access
    • No SMS option 
    • No Samsung-specific features


We recommend using motica care as default for your calls when you are logged in to benefit from all the benefits of the motica/SmartLiberty solution.
